Hotel Derby has a new look

Following a roof fire in May 2020, the Hotel Derby on Bahnhofstrasse in Zermatt was demolished, including the restaurant, and completely re-built. The attractive main building has been constructed in a traditional Valais style. New rooms and terrace at Hotel Hemizeus

In spring 2021, the three-star Hotel Hemizeus is renovating 11 double rooms in the main Zeus building. Rooms will be redesigned in an Alpine style, with underfloor heating, larger bathrooms and new furniture and lighting. The work will be completed over May and June, with the hotel re-opening scheduled for July. The hotel owners will also be adding a terrace to the restaurant with lounge seating and tables where guests can enjoy the view of the Matterhorn. This can also be used in winter. All the rooms and apartments in the other buildings, Hera and Mira, have been renovated over the last few years. The facades of all three buildings have also been renovated. Next year, the remaining ten bedrooms in the Zeus building are scheduled to be renovated, completing the hotel’s refurbishment work.

Silvana Mountain Hotel renovates outdoor area

The Silvana Mountain Hotel is redesigning its outdoor area for the forthcoming summer season. In addition to the lounge area, there’ll be a children’s play area with a climbing wall, swings, treehouse, waterwheel and table tennis, plus a marmot observation post. Around 15 marmots live within 20 metres of the hotel. There will still be a bike chalet for guests where they can charge, wash and repair their e-bikes. The hotel also has e-mountain bikes and kickbikes for hire. The redesign of the outdoor area is the last stage in the full renovation of the hotel with new bedrooms, a new spa and a new restaurant.

On 20 April 2020, construction will start on the land next to the hotel, building the “SchlossHouse” and an extension to the existing spa and gym at the Schlosshotel Zermatt. During the off-peak season, the Hotel Rex changed its name to “the rex”. A new concept has also been launched, plus renovations have been carried out on the lobby, lounge bar and bedrooms. On 6 December 2019, “the rex” will present their new lounge bar. The design is based on their new concept – being an open house for both locals and visitors. “The rex” is partnering with ONA – a company that develops new gastronomy concepts – and will open a pop-up restaurant in the hotel, aimed at offering young chefs the opportunity to showcase their skill. There will also be glass walls in “the rex” offering fantastic views of the chefs as they prepare delicious meals on a fire pit right outside the restaurant.
New Igloo Village theme is Underwater World

In November, a new Igloo Village will be created in Zermatt at Rotenboden with a restaurant, outdoor bar, overnight accommodations, Whirlpool and the best view of the Matterhorn. This year, it will be exotic: ice artists will create a snow palace featuring animals of the underwater world out of snow and ice.

Hotel National has been undergoing refurbishments since the end of September and will re-open on 6 December 2019 with a new wellness area, new bedrooms and a new roof. In autumn 2019, the Parkhotel Beau Site will be extensively renovating and updating its reception area, lobby, bar and restaurants. From the end of November 2019, guests will be able to experience the new look and three new concepts: the highlight of the Grill Restaurant will be the delicious cuts of meat from the wood fire grill, and a selection of fish, seafood and vegetables will also be available; the Gornergratsaal will feature a renovated restaurant area with a buffet and show kitchen, serving breakfast in the morning and different buffets in the evening including meat, fish and vegetarian delicacies and the third concept will be a new ‘shop-in-shop’ vinothek with expertly chosen wines that you can taste or buy in store.
Renovations to the Hotel Alex

During October and November 2019, the Hotel Alex will be refurbishing the Alex Lounge Bar, the breakfast room and the wellness centre. The Alex Lounge Bar and reception area will be completely renovated, including laying of new floors, new bar furniture and remodelling of the walls. The breakfast room will be furnished with new upholstered chairs, leather armchairs and settees. In the wellness area. Hotel Alex is renovating the saunas, quiet areas, steam baths and multi-sensory showers. The range of wellness services comprises: massages and beauty treatments, Finnish sauna for men and women, with separate quiet areas, steam baths and multi-sensory showers, a modern exercise studio, a squash court and an indoor tennis court, as well as Zermatt’s first swimming pool with a family jacuzzi.

Hotel Elite reopens

On 1 December 2019, the Hotel Elite, which was constructed in 1962, will reopen after comprehensive renovations to the rooms, restaurant, reception, wellness area and garden terrace. Local materials have been used as much as possible during the work. The 3-star hotel’s five floors have been renamed with the names of stops on the Gornergrat Bahn because the hotel’s founder previously worked for the railway.
New Aparthotel Naco

In December 2019, a new hotel will be opening its doors at Spissstrasse 44 in Zermatt, to be known as "Naco Aparthotel, by Arca". It will offer a rooftop suite, two junior rooftop suites, eight two-room apartments and 17 studios. The aparthotel is owned by the Hotel and Solebad Arca, which is immediately adjacent. Guests can also use the Hotel und Solebad Arca’s spa, with saline spa, sauna and steam bath. This spa area will be expanded by the start of the winter.
Cervo: summer 2020 construction work

In summer 2020 the Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort will alter the main building and build an additional chalet below the present chalet five. This means Cervo will remain closed throughout summer 2020. The Ferdinand Pop-up Hotel will open, however, so that visitors can still spend their summer holidays in Cervo.
New spa at the Silvana Mountain Hotel

The Silvana Mountain Hotel will be refurbishing its spa area between September and December 2019. In addition to the existing spa pool, three different saunas, multi-sensory showers, two relaxation rooms, a lounge and a massage room are being developed in several little chalets on a 200-square-metre site. It is all being constructed with natural stone tiles and mature wood, to create an Alpine atmosphere. Following the refurbishment, the hotel will be able to claim proudly to be the closest spa to the Matterhorn. The Silvana Mountain Spa will be accessible to the public, by request, from 5 December 2019.

Tradition Julen has new apartments and studios available to rent. The “Downtown” apartment, which sleeps four to seven people, is available to book now. Located at Getwingstrasse 12 in the heart of Zermatt, it has accommodation on three floors, all with lift access. The balcony offers views of the Matterhorn. Free use of the spa facilities in the Romantik Hotel Julen and Hotel Alpenhof is included in the price. Breakfast, half board and daily cleaning options can also be added on request.

SAC Monte Rosa Hut: new management

The continuation of the SAC Monte Rosa Hut has been secured. The Rubin family had to stop managing the hut for health reasons, but Richard Lehner (Zermatt mountain guide) and Kilian Emmenegger (Zermatt ski instructor) have been confirmed as the new managers. They both bring a wealth of experience with them, as they used to manage the Gandegghütte. They will start their new role in summer 2019.

Hotel Admiral becomes Hotel Mama

Hotel Admiral will remain open until 30 April 2019. After that, it will be fully renovated both inside and out. The hotel will re-open for the 2019/2020 winter season under the new name of Hotel Mama, with 29 rooms (four more than before). It will continue to be a three-star superior hotel and will be managed by JuMA Ho-tel AG. Hotel Mama will also have a co-working space managed together with PuraWorka.

Roman Codina is the new director of the Parkhotel Beau Site. Originally from Schaffhausen, he has many years of hotel management experience from working in a wide range of hotels. Codina replaces Franz Schwegler-Dossetto, who has been the director of Beau Site for 24 years. A series of building renovations, refurbishments and alterations were carried out under his leadership. He is now retiring.
Kinhütte: new packages

In time for the season opening on 28 June 2019, the Kinhütte has announced a wide range of new packages. These include guided Kin Glacier hikes where you can see wild Alpine goats, voluntary work such as chopping wood, drying crockery and baking cakes, yoga and a relaxation programme with a massage. At 2,584 metres above sea level and surrounded by four-thousanders in the Mischabel group, the hut prioritises sustainability and takes waste reduction, food recycling and the use of local products very seriously. Eating together round a table provides companionship and sociable conversation for sole travellers.
