Four women report on their ascent of the Matterhorn

28/03/2019

As part of the project "Matterhorn: Ladies please!" Zermatt Tourism looked for four women to climb the Matterhorn and share their experiences with the world on social media. Over 150 creative application videos were received - and the four participants have been selected.

Judith Wernli, Anne-Sophie Thilo, Sue Hirschi and Steffi Hunziker are the four women who will climb the Matterhorn on 19 July 2019 and document the ascent and the entire preparation phase on Instagram and Facebook. "Lots of people dream of climbing this iconic Swiss mountain, but don't know exactly what it takes and what goes with it," says Daniel Luggen, President of Zermatt Tourism. The stories of the women will let people see the experiences, adventures and feelings up close.

Over 150 applicants

Three participants were picked as part of the "Matterhorn: Ladies please!" application process organised by Zermatt Tourism, Zermatters and Mammut Sports Group AG. More than 150 creative application videos were submitted; you can see a compilation of the highlights here. The project was deliberately aimed exclusively at women, to tie in with the Zermatt - Matterhorn slogan of "Women on the Mountain" in summer 2019. This year the Zermatt open-air theatre performances, which take place every two years on the Riffelberg at 2,600 metres above sea level, will focus on Lucy Walker, the first woman to reach the Matterhorn summit. Against the unique backdrop of the Matterhorn, director Livia Anne Richard will bring the world premiere of MATTERHORN: NO LADIES PLEASE! to the stage.

A visit to the premiere also marks the start of the intensive training for the four women, who will be equipped by Mammut. While they make their own preparations for their first Matterhorn ascent from April to July 2019, they will be accompanied by experienced mountain guides during an intensive week of training from 11 to 18 July 2019, before the Matterhorn ascent on 19 July 2019. The women will also be accompanied by professionals for the ascent, with an overnight stay in the Hörnli hut beforehand.

Well-known radio presenter

Zermatt Tourism is delighted to welcome Judith Wernli on board, a radio presenter well known throughout German-speaking Switzerland. "We are convinced that her empathy, athleticism and love for Zermatt make Judith a perfect match for the other three women," says Daniel Luggen. You can follow the contributions posted by Judith and the other three participants on social media at any time on www.zermatt.ch/en/MATTERHORN-LADIES-PLEASE.
