Graffiti artwork inaugurated in the heart of Zermatt

25/08/2021

Directly opposite the train station, a 200m2  work of art now welcomes visitors to Zermatt. The newly inaugurated graffiti by artist Jasm One is part of the project Art Valais Wallis it’s water path.

The 18-metre-high work was created in the summer of 2021 within two weeks under difficult conditions, with the artist was repeatedly confronted with rain and wintry temperatures. On 24 August 2021, the graffiti was inaugurated in the presence of representatives from the Zermatt municipality and the Alpine Club from Great Britain, among others.

The title of the artwork "No peak rise above her" is a reference to a poem dedicated to the achievement of the British mountaineer Lucy Walker. 150 years ago, she became the first woman ever to climb the Matterhorn.

The work is a tribute to Lucy Walker – and a direct comment on the fact that it took 150 years for the name and story of Lucy Walker to finally become known to the general public. The artist Jasm One (Issam Rezgui) also draws attention to the problem of the melting glaciers with the work in the middle of Zermatt.
