The post carriage now delivers parcels in car-free Zermatt. Commissioning of the post carriage was celebrated in Bahnhofplatz on Wednesday 4 September 2019.

Fun gives way to seriousness

Bahnhofstrasse in Zermatt is closed to traffic every day from 12 noon. This makes delivering parcels in the afternoon more difficult.

Alpin Cargo, the subsidiary of Planzer Transporte Schweiz, was confronted with this delivery conundrum as parcel deliveries in the afternoon by electric vehicle was illegal. Yet this puzzle was solved by a conversation between Nils Planzer, Planzer Transporte CEO and Romy Biner-Hauser, Zermatt municipal councillor.

Biner-Hauser joked that Alpin Cargo should buy a carriage for deliveries because horses and carriages are excluded from the traffic ban. Nils Planzer took Romy’s suggestion seriously, whereupon Christian Ruffiner, Alpin Cargo Zermatt branch manager, organised the carriage with his team. Now - one year later - the carriage is ready for use. "The carriage not only fulfils its purpose, it is also a great attraction in car-free Zermatt", comments Daniel Luggen, Zermatt Tourism’s Director of Tourism, on the new parcel delivery method.
