Sustainability is already a top priority in car-free Zermatt. Zermatt companies are committed to pursuing sustainability every day, with many of them receiving awards for their achievements.

To build on this success and raise more awareness of the issue in the destination, the Zermatt Hoteliers’ Association is hosting the first Sustainable Day.
It will offer a wide-ranging programme of training, information stands and discussions with fascinating insights into how sustainability can integrate with tourism.

The organisers’ aim is to ensure that Zermatt’s environment is looked after for future generations. “With over 100 businesses, mostly family-owned, the hotel industry is the backbone of Zermatt, some might say its DNA, so it is crucial for the Hoteliers’ Association to commit to this issue,” says Daniel F. Lauber, Chairman of the Zermatt Hoteliers’ Association.

When it comes to sustainability, the car-free Alpine village of Zermatt is a pioneer. For years, only electric vehicles have been driven in the village, and the waste management strategy supports sustainable waste sorting. Zermatt has also held the environmentally-friendly “Energiestadt” label since 2016. The Sustainable Day will offer an exciting platform where people can learn about and develop future projects.
