Matterhorn Alpine Crossing: border crossing to open from 1 July 2023

23/02/2023

The countdown is on: the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II will go into operation on 1 July 2023. The new 3S cable car connects the Klein Matterhorn mountain station with the Testa Grigia valley station in Italy, creating the highest border crossing in the Alps – the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing.

The Matterhorn Alpine Crossing project first envisioned more than 80 years ago will bring the two destinations of Zermatt and Breuil-Cervinia closer together. The new 3S Matterhorn Glacier Ride II cable car runs from the Klein Matterhorn mountain station at 3,883 metres above sea level down to the Testa Grigia valley station at 3,458 metres above sea level. For the first time ever, guests will be able to traverse the route from Italy to Switzerland and vice versa on two feet – without skis or snowboards. The new section closes the last remaining gap between Zermatt and Breuil-Cervinia and turns the long-standing vision of the highest Alpine crossing by cable car into reality.

Customised tourism and exclusivity

Zermatt Bergbahnen is constantly setting new standards in the cable car industry. As an industry leader, it is innovative and visionary. CEO Markus Hasler is convinced of the benefits of the expansion: “The new connection between Italy and Switzerland expands the services of Zermatt Bergbahnen even further. The corresponding pricing strategy does not promote mass or transit tourism; it is geared at creating experiences for individual travellers.” Luggage transport will be offered from 2024 to take the strain out of the journey across the Alps. Various activities are available on the peaks, such as the Snow Xperience Plateau Rosa adventure world around the Testa Grigia valley station or the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at the Klein Matterhorn mountain station.

Intensive months ahead

In the next few weeks, the final concrete work on the valley station building will be completed and installation work carried out on the electronics. Since the beginning of February 2023, work has been underway around the cable operation. This is one of the most spectacular construction phases and takes about three months. The first cabins will then be delivered at the beginning of May 2023, in time for the various assembly and commissioning stages required to make the new 3S cable car ready for travel.
