The old lady says goodbye – new construction of the Schluhmatte valley station

After 58 years in service, the "old lady" is retiring. In summer 2022, the aerial tramway from Zermatt to Furi will be dismantled and replaced by a more modern version. At the same time, the building at the Schluhmatte valley station will be rebuilt and extended to include office space for the Zermatt Bergbahnen administration staff.  The new construction of the valley station will also optimise the flow of guests and luggage, which is important for the completion of the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing. The existing eight-person "Matterhorn Express” gondola will continue to operate throughout the construction period.

Matterhorn Alpine Crossing – step by step to the goal

A long-cherished vision will soon become reality: a continuous, year-round connection between Zermatt and Cervinia. As the last piece of the puzzle of the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, the "Matterhorn Glacier Ride ll" will enable the highest continuous crossing of the Alps by cable car from spring 2023. The modern 3S cable car connects the Klein Matterhorn mountain station with the Testa Grigia station in Italy, offering a unique, high-alpine experience – especially in the summer months – plus a new travel route to Zermatt.

The warmer temperatures are currently ideal for tackling the remaining concrete work on the new 3S cableway. The cable car support structures are also being assembled and the electromechanical equipment installed in collaboration with Leitner. In the next stage, the valley and mountain stations are expected to be almost completed by autumn. This includes the station buildings and the implementation of a photovoltaic system.

New cabins for the Matterhorn Express

The Matterhorn Express will be upgraded with new cable cars in May 2022. Built to a higher spec, 154 elegant state-of-the-art “Omega 4” cabins will replace the current “Omega 3” cabins.

This will standardise all 260 vehicles of the Matterhorn Express on the Zermatt - Furi - Schwarzsee - Trockener Steg route with the same type of cabin, promising guests a particularly pleasant journey from this summer onwards.
