Zermatt: Record visitor numbers

28/01/2019

Between November 2017 and October 2018, a record number of visitors stayed in the Zermatt – Matterhorn destination. The record confirms the continued growth in tourism for the area and inspires us to do even better.

In the 2017/18 financial year, the Zermatt – Matterhorn destination had more overnight bookings than ever before, at more than 2.2 million (2,216,875). This represents an increase of 6.2 per cent over the previous year. Out of the forty countries that visitors travelled from, only the numbers from the UK fell slightly, by 0.5 per cent. All other markets showed growth, with overnight stays of guests from the US even increasing by 20 per cent compared to last year. This has had an impact on our Top 5 markets, with the US now overtaking the UK.

Switzerland remains our key market, making up around 40 per cent of overnight stays in Zermatt, Täsch and Randa, followed by Germany (8.5 per cent), the US (6.4 per cent), the UK (5.8 per cent) and Japan (3.5 per cent).

The Zermatt – Matterhorn destination has 7,772 hotel beds and 5,066 apartment beds. Available hotel beds had an occupancy rate of 60 per cent. "An occupancy rate of 60 per cent puts us significantly above the Swiss average, but obviously we would like to increase this even further," said Zermatt Tourismus President Daniel Luggen. "We think the greatest opportunities lie in expanding our digital presence, improving how we offer our services to visitors." Zermatt Tourismus will present its plans to ensure these positive statistics continue in the future to members and the public at its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 6 February 2019.
