...on a toboggan
The day begins with the fantastic ride up to the Gornergrat. You’ll go over the breathtaking Findelbach viaduct, past ancient pine forests, with views of the incredible Matterhorn appearing every time you emerge from a tunnel.
With the Wolli Card, children under 9 years old travel free on the Gornergrat railway, which is the highest open-air rack railway in Europe and Switzerland's first electric rack railway.
At 3,089 m above sea level, the Gornergrat's sunny viewing platform can be reached all year round and has been one of Switzerland's most popular destinations since 1898. The panoramic mountain views, especially of the Matterhorn, are simply unforgettable. A photo of this breathtaking panorama is an absolute must.
Next, the Toboggan Run is calling. Well-maintained toboggans (some with a children's seat) can be hired from the Rotenboden station. Time to head off down the 1.5 km-long descent!
Tobogganing and having fun in the fresh Alpine air works up an appetite. The family-friendly Buffet & Bar in Riffelberg offers a wide range of regional and Italian delicacies.
Re-energised, it's time for the next toboggan run. To get you back up the mountain, trains run every ten minutes from Riffelberg to Rotenboden.
The Gornergrat railway or the Riffelberg Express via Furi then take you back to Zermatt. You can stop off in one of the family-friendly restaurants for a hot chocolate and a piece of cake before taking the Matterhorn Express back to Zermatt.
